Supply chain pressures, rising costs, and growing regulatory demands are driving food testing labs to evaluate alternatives. Here's what to look for.
For the better part of two decades, food testing laboratories — particularly in nutritional analysis and microbiology — have operated with a limited set of reagent suppliers. The dominance of a handful of international brands created a stable but expensive ecosystem: reliable products, but at premium prices with rigid supply terms and limited flexibility.
That ecosystem is now under pressure from multiple directions. Global supply chain disruptions, rising logistics costs, and increasingly stringent domestic regulatory requirements are pushing labs to ask a question they haven't seriously considered before: are there alternatives that can match — or exceed — the performance we're used to, at a significantly better value?
For labs considering independent reagent suppliers, we recommend focusing on five criteria:
1. Validation Data, Not Marketing Claims. Demand to see independent third-lab validation results on your specific matrices. Datasheet specs without real-sample validation are not sufficient.
2. Batch-to-Batch Consistency. Ask for batch QC data over multiple production runs. A single impressive validation batch means nothing if the next batch drifts.
3. Regulatory Alignment. The product must align with your regulatory framework — whether that's GB standards, ISO methods, or AOAC. "Comparable to" is not the same as "designed to."
4. Technical Support Depth. Can their team help with method setup, troubleshooting, and accreditation documentation? Or are they just shipping boxes?
5. Supply Chain Resilience. Domestic manufacturing means shorter lead times, more predictable delivery, and no customs-related delays. This matters more than most labs realize until there's a disruption.
The shift is real, and it's accelerating. The labs that evaluate alternatives thoroughly — not on price alone, but on total performance and support — will be the ones that benefit most from the changing landscape.
